Campaign launched to improve inpatient hydration

A campaign has been launched in hospitals and nursing homes to encourage healthcare staff to better monitor and manage inpatients’ fluid status.

The Hydration Matters campaign has been developed by NHS Kidney Care, the service improvement organisation. Inadequate hydration is one of the main causes of acute kidney injury (AKI) and other avoidable healthcare complications.   AKI affects around one in five people admitted to hospital as an emergency and many elderly patients. However, work by NHS Kidney Care has found that nearly a third of AKI cases are avoidable.
